The Wierzchowska Cave got formed in the Upper Jurassic limestone and is an excellent example of underground karstic formation. It is 1500 meter-long labyrinth of galleries and chambers with fairy-like ornamentations. There is no larger cave in the Cracovian Jura. The material finds discovered in the cave testify to intensive human activity in the Neolithic period (7000 years ago). Bones of cave bear, hyena and other animals living here in the Ice Age were found in the cave-earth. The Wierzchowska Cave was one of Europe's first to be opened for visitors (19thc.).
Now it has the longest tourist route of all Polish caves. The route leads through the winding Long Narrowing to the cave's largest Ball Room via the Room with Kettles and the Little Hotel and ends up in the Primitive Man's Room. The walls and the ceiling of the cave are nicely decorated with dripstone formations. Bats and meta menardi spiders attract attention of visitors. The cave is located on the territory of the Dolinki Podkrakowskie Jurassic Landscape Park and enjoys the status of nature monument.

| Tatra Mountains | |
|
Tatra Mountains are the highest and truly alpine section of the Carpathian Mountain Range. This is a typical almost encyclopedic definition. In fact those dry facts hide picturesque landscapes, gorgeous nature and remote places are hidden.
Read an impression
What is so special about this place?
|
|
Simply they are unique. On the small area (only 795 sq km) are gathered thousands of alpine plants, animals and spectacular geological miracles. There is no place like this in the world - the real Alps in miniature.
The mountains are situated on the border between Slovakia and Poland. The biggest Polish city is Zakopane, the biggest city in Slovakia is Poprad.
Tatras were shaped by glaciers that eroded and became as they are now. Their area is divided into three different parts. Different by geomorphologic mean that causes various landscapes. The Western Tatras are built mostly from sedimentary rocks, with rounded peaks and steep slopes. The High Tatras a crystalline part with towers, and rock walls. Finally, The Bielskie Tatras. All those parts are kingdoms of different ecological groups of species.

|

Law protects the whole area of Tatra Mountains. On both sides there are National Parks (more can be found here and here) that is why tourists are obliged to use only marked paths.
There are numbers of marked paths in mountains, their difficulties vary from easy strolls in valleys to vertical climbing with artificial steps and iron chains as an aid. In sedimentary rocks there are plenty of caves, some of them are available for tourists.

| Tatra surroundings | |
The Tatra Mountains are surrounded by four basins: Podhale, Orawa, Spisz, Liptow. These basins are cultural regions where, despite political borders, people cultivate their habits. Citizens of each region have their own customs, clothes even though all of them are called highlanders.
Podhale is the region north from The Tatras in Poland. This is a land of wooden gothic churches. The capital city of Podhale is Nowy Targ - famous from sheepskins and a market. Each Thursday and Saturday thousands of Slovak and Polish people gather on the big market. You can buy or sell everything there!
The region which surrounds eastern part of The Tatras is Spisz. Spisz is the land of medieval castles like: Stara Lubovla, Spiski Castle , Czorsztyn, Niedzica. Recently, a Gothic way has been opened there. Owing to its place this region had complicated history. Owners of that land changed very often from Hungarian through German to Polish. The pearl of this region are Pieniny Mountains. Pieniny Mountains are not high but extremely charming limestones mountains. In an area of Pieniny Mountains live species which cannot be seen in other regions of the whole world (endemits) i.e.: butterflies.
Also on Spisz is the Slovak Paradise . These mountains are the most incredible place whoever could imagine: lovely paths in gorges with ladders along waterfalls, passages above torrents with artificial steps, etc.
To the south from Tatra Mountains in Slovakia is Liptov Basin. Beautiful region rich in caves (Vazecka, Demianowska) and old castles. The main city is Liptovski Mikulasz where the execution of a legendary robber - Janosik took place.
The last region is Orawa western border of The Tatras. There is very famous Orawski castle build on unbelievably steep rock. In Polish part of Orawa are special ecosystem - a peat bog, very unique and interesting.
